”Someone In The Dark” was part of the 1982 “E.T. Storybook” album. Michael narrated the story of the “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” movie by Steven Spielberg and “Someone In The Dark” was the opening and closing song. The two versions were lyrically different and had a different soundbite of E.T. in them.
The recording for the album happened simultaneously to the recording for “Thriller.” It was released just a few weeks prior to Michael’s solo album, which went against the agreement between MCA Records and Epic Records. A lawsuit ensued, and the “E.T. Storybook” was pulled from the shelves and discontinued, making it an automatic collectors item.
The song, written and produced by the same team behind “Thriller,” was also released as a 7” vinyl promo single to radio stations, once again breaching the agreement. It was eventually released on the 2001 “Thriller Special Edition” album.
